What Is Rotary?
Rotary International, headquartered in Evanston, IL, is the world's first service club organization. Its more than 1.2 million members in more than 200 countries and geographical areas volunteer their time and talent to further the Rotary motto, "Service Above Self." The history of Rotary is covered on a separate page.
Rotarians provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. More information about Rotary is available on the Rotary International website.
The Rotary Foundation, covered in more detail on a separate page, enables Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.
The benefits of being a Rotarian include serving the community, networking and friendship, and promoting ethics and leadership skills.
The district and international leadership structure is designed to support the clubs and help them increase service efforts in their communities and abroad.
Rotary Four-Way Test
In 1932, Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor created The Four-Way Test, a code of ethics adopted by Rotary 11 years later.
The test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions:
Of the things we think, say or do:
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
